New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson scored a half-century in his comeback match against Bangladesh on Friday during the World Cup 2023 match in Chennai before retiring injured.
Williamson made an appearance in his first official encounter since the Gujarat Titans’ IPL 2023 debut in Ahmedabad in March, and he scored a half-century (81 Balls) for New Zealand in their pursuit of a 246-run goal.
Williamson initially waited before increasing his scoring pace, but in the 38th over, he was struck on his left hand by the mid-off fielder as he tried to single to the non-striker’s end. He decided to retire hurt while being visited by the physiotherapists after continuing to bat for another.
“Kane Williamson will have an X-ray on his left thumb tomorrow after being hit by the ball while running between the wickets in tonight’s match against Bangladesh.,” Black Caps, New Zealand’s social media handle, wrote on X.
Williamson experienced a significant setback earlier this year when playing for Gujarat in his debut IPL game. At the Narendra Modi Stadium, Williamson attempted to rescue a boundary from Chennai Super Kings when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), putting him out of action for over six months.
Prior to withdrawing from New Zealand’s first two league-stage victories over England and the Netherlands, Williamson had participated for the Kiwis in the warm-up games, scoring 54 not out and 37.
Ultimately, New Zealand easily defeated the opposition by an eight-wicket margin, with Daryl Mitchell scoring 89 runs off just 66 deliveries to remain unbeaten.
