3 records that can be broken in today’s India vs New Zealand match of the 2023 World Cup ft. Virat Kohli

For the record, India has not won an ICC match against New Zealand in the last 20 years. Overall, New Zealand leads India by ten points to three.

Who remembers that the previous time India faced New Zealand in the World Cup, MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja’s 116-run partnership was the second-highest ever for their country in one-day internationals? Or that Rohit Sharma was just a couple boundaries away from becoming the World Cup’s leading run-scorer?

All we can think about is the Dhoni runout and the hoodoo. Change that to a few runs here and there, and everything makes more sense, the data speak for themselves. We’ve highlighted three big personal records that could be rewritten today for the numbers fanatics and neutrals in the crowd. But whether they have lasting relevance is completely dependent on the drama that unfolds on the 22 yard line.

#1 Virat Kohli could be the fastest to 1,500 runs vs New Zealand

Virat Kohli has 1,433 runs in 29 One-Day International innings against New Zealand. After Ricky Ponting (1,971 runs), Sachin Tendulkar (1,750 runs), Kumar Sangakkara (1,568 runs), Sanath Jayasuriya (1,519 runs), and Jacques Kallis (1,449 runs), he is the fifth-highest run-scorer against the Kiwis in the format.

If Kohli hits 67 runs today, he will become the fastest player in history to reach 1,500 runs against New Zealand. Ponting currently holds the record for most innings played in 35, followed by Tendulkar (38), Jayasuriya (42), and Sangakkara (43).

Kohli has five centuries and eight half-centuries in this contest with an overall brilliant average of 55.11. His best was a 134-ball 154* in Mohali in 2016. The last time India played New Zealand in Dharamshala in ODIs, he scored 85* (81).

#2 Shubman Gill requires 14 more runs to be the quickest to reach 2,000 runs in ODIs

Shubman Gill has shown glimpses of excellent form in his two innings of the 2023 World Cup so far. During his 55-ball 53-run knock against Bangladesh, he hit five boundaries and two sixes. After 37 innings, the kid has 1,986 ODI runs.

He is now only 14 runs shy of 2,000 runs in ODIs. If he hits that mark today in his 38th innings, he will break South African legend Hashim Amla’s record of 40 innings.

For India, the current record holder is Shikhar Dhawan, who accomplished the feat in 48 innings.

#3 Tom Latham could be the fastest New Zealand batter to 1,000 ODI runs vs India

It’s a big chance, but if Tom Latham plays well today, he may become New Zealand’s fastest player to score 1,000 ODI runs against India. After 20 innings, the keeper-batter, who now mainly hits in the middle order, has 871 runs.

Only Ross Taylor (1385), Nathan Astle (1207), Stephen Fleming (1098), and Kane Williamson (1078) have scored 1000 runs against the Asian team. Astle is the fastest among them, breaking the record in his 22nd innings in 2019.Latham will shatter Astle’s four-year-old record by one inning if he scores 129 runs today.
