Carse will take the place of Topley, who was forced out of the competition after breaking his left index finger against South Africa on Saturday.

The ICC event technical committee reported on Monday that Brydon Carse has been authorised as a replacement for Reece Topley in England’s roster for the current World Cup.

England suffered a severe setback when Reece Topley fractured his finger during England’s 229-run defeat against South Africa at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Topley managed the agony and bowled 8.5 overs on Saturday, but scans later that day revealed a fracture. Topley’s World Cup campaign came to an end when he was injured while attempting to stop Rassie van der Dussen’s powerfully hit straight drive.

Carse will take the place of Topley, who was forced out of the competition after breaking his left index finger against South Africa on Saturday.

Before a replacement player may be formally added to the squad, the event technical committee must approve the substitution.

England is presently tenth in the table, with one victory and three losses yielding two points in four games.

“He’s a brilliant all-round package,” Joe Root said on Monday. “He can score some handy runs for you, is very dynamic in the field and has a unique wicket-taking ability. He’s got that [Ben] Stokes element to him where sometimes, you feel like nothing is happening and he’ll pick up wickets.”
