Gujarat Titans (GT) have announced Shubman Gill as their new captain for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The decision had to be made as Hardik Pandya, the IPL 2022 champion, elected to rejoin his former side Mumbai Indians (MI).
Gujarat Titans had a number of candidates to choose from as Hardik’s replacement, including Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan. Nonetheless, the Titans chose to award the captain’s hat to Gill, who is widely regarded as the next big thing in Indian cricket.
Gill, aged 24, made his IPL debut in 2018 after being named Man of the Tournament in India’s Under-19 title-winning campaign, captained by Prithvi Shaw. He has since reaped benefits for both club and country.
Needless to say, IPL 2023 was his first major breakout season, in which he demonstrated to the world that he could also be clinical in the T20 format. He amassed an incredible 890 runs in 17 appearances there.
It will take time to see if Gill has the same influence as a captain. The Titans still have a lot of work to do to enhance their roster, as they enter the auctions with the highest budget of all, INR 38.15 crore. The bidding war will take place in Dubai on December 19.
