Uganda makes history by qualifying for the T20 World Cup in 2024, while Zimbabwe is eliminated.

Uganda has qualified for the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in the United States and the West Indies. Uganda followed Namibia in booking a place in the premier ICC event after defeating Rwanda in the final game of the T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier.

This is the first time Uganda will feature in an ICC World Cup event. Uganda also became the fifth African nation to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Kenya. Earlier in the qualifiers, Uganda stunned Zimbabwe to register a historic defeat, which also helped their cause in qualification.

The T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to take place from June 4 to June 30. England are the defending champions having won the title in Australia last year. The tournament will see 20 teams divided into four groups of five nations each. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super Eights stage, where two groups will be formed with four countries per side. The top two sides from each group will then move on to the semi-finals, followed by the final.

The qualified teams so far are

West Indies (host), United States of America (host), Australia (top eight finish), England (top eight finish), India (top eight finish), Netherlands (top eight finish), New Zealand (top eight finish), Pakistan (top eight finish), South Africa (top eight finish), Sri Lanka (top eight finish), Afghanistan (highest ranked team outside of the teams that have automatic qualification based on the T20I rankings at November 14 2022 cut-off) and Bangladesh (next best on T20I rankings at November 14 2022 cut-off).
