‘If Pakistan defeats India…’: Gautam Gambhir’s interesting take on Ind-Pak cricket rivalry

Gautam Gambhir, the unsung hero of India’s 2011 World Cup victory, believes that India-Pakistan is no longer cricket’s most important rivalry. Gautam Gambhir stated on a StarSports chat programme that the India-Pakistan game has lost its allure because both teams do not play much cricket together due to fragile political relations. For the recent decade, India and Pakistan have only faced each other in ICC events and continental contests, with no bilateral series.

Underscoring Rohit Sharma and men’s sad failures in the World Cup final and World Test championship, the left-hander stated that India vs Australia is now, arguably, the strongest rivalry. India and Australia have the best talent, which often results in a nail-biting situation that spectators enjoy watching.

Gambhir awarded the men in blue the edge when comparing recent results and the type of quality both nations showcase on the world stage.

“Pakistan has dominated India a lot of times. Currently, if you see the level of both teams, India is far superior to Pakistan in all three formats. If Pakistan defeats India it’s an upset, if India defeats Pakistan, it’s very much given,” he added.

India defeated Pakistan in the World Cup to maintain its perfect record. Both sides have played each other eight times, with India defeating Pakitan each time.

Team India will hopefully face Pakistan and Australia in the T20 World Cup this June. The Men in Blue will also tour Australia around the end of 2024 to compete in a four-Test series that will also be part of the World Test Championship (WTC).
