Matthew Wade to miss start of IPL in order to play Sheffield Shield final

Matthew Wade will miss at least the first two IPL 2024 matches for the Gujarat Titans due to his participation in Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield final from March 21 to 25.

This season’s IPL will begin on March 22.

The Titans, last year’s finalists, will play their first game against the Mumbai Indians on March 25 and their second game against the Chennai Super Kings on March 27, both of which Wade will miss.

However, the left-hander may be fit for selection in Titans’ third IPL match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 31.

“He’s spoken with his IPL franchise and they’re happy to allow him to stay here, which probably equates to him potentially missing their first game,” Tasmania head coach Jeff Vaughan told reporters in Hobart.

“We feel very fortunate to have someone of Matt’s ilk coming back into our group, and his experience and his performances at the back end of our season,” said Vaughan.

Wade was a key member of GT’s title-winning IPL 2022 campaign, appearing in ten matches and hitting 157 runs with a strike rate of 113.

However, the 36-year-old did not play a single match in the previous edition because Wriddhiman Saha was picked as the wicketkeeper-batter.
