ICC bans Bangladesh cricketer Nasir Hossain for two years on corruption charges

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned Bangladesh cricketer and franchise player Nasir Hossain from all cricket for two years, with six months suspended, after he accepted three accusations of violating the Emirates Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Code.

In a statement issued today, the world cricket apex body stated that Nasir, who was charged in September 2023, admitted three charges, one of which was that he failed to disclose to the designated Anti-Corruption Official (without undue delay) the receipt of a gift valued at more than US$750 (Tk. 82, 500), specifically the gift of a new iPhone 12.

He received the gift during the Abu Dhabi T10 cricket competition in 2021. The event took place between November 19, 2021 and December 4, 2021. Six teams participated in the competition.

The second charge was that he did not reveal to the designated official the full nature of the approach or invitation he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct using the new iPhone 12.

According to the third charge, he failed or refused, without compelling justification, to cooperate with the Designated Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation into possible Corrupt Conduct under the Code, including (without limitation) failing to provide accurate and complete any information and/or documentation requested by the Designated Anti-Corruption Official) during the investigation.

Nasir has opted to admit to the charges and accept the sentence rather than face an Anti-Corruption Tribunal hearing, as required under the Code.

He will be free to resume international cricket on April 7, 2025, if he meets the criteria of the suspended component of the sentence.

Nasir, previously regarded as Bangladesh’s finisher, last represented the country in international cricket in 2018. He appeared in 19 Tests (1044 runs), 65 One-Day Internationals (1281 runs), and 31 Twenty20 Internationals (370 runs) for his country. He had two century (one in each of the Test and One-Day International formats).
