Mushfiqur Rahim ruled out of Test series against Sri Lanka with fractured thumb

Bangladesh has suffered a major setback ahead of the next Test series against Sri Lanka, as seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim has been ruled out due to a thumb injury.

Rahim suffered a thumb injury during his team’s third ODI triumph over Sri Lanka and underwent an MRI.

Bangladesh physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said that Mushfiqur will miss the two-Test series against Sri Lanka and is expected to be out for up to four weeks.

“After the match, Mushfiqur underwent an X-ray examination in Dhaka, which revealed an avulsion fracture on the MIP joint of his right thumb. He is currently undergoing conservative management for his injury and is expected to be sidelined for around three to four weeks, consequently ruling him out of participation in the Test series against Sri Lanka,” Bayjedul was quoted by ICC.

BCB has yet to name a replacement for Rahim.

Mushfiqur collected four catches behind the wickets before assisting Rishad Hossain’s blistering innings. He was undefeated on 37 and averaging more than a run per ball when the third ODI against Sri Lanka was won in the 41st over.

Bangladesh won the T20I series 2-1, while hosts Sri Lanka won the ODI series 2-1 before moving on to the Test series, which is part of the 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship.
