SLC unveil new Lanka T10 tournament scheduled for December

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced the launch of Lanka T10, the country’s inaugural ten-over competition, which will take place from December 12 to 23. The tournament will take place in Colombo, with the player auction taking place on November 10. At the same time, there are plans to organise a women’s T10 league.

While specifics about the women’s league are scarce, an SLC statement states that the men’s event will feature six franchises named after iconic Sri Lankan cities. All games will be held in Colombo, and player registration is open until November 5.

“Cricket has been evolving, and T10 is the latest form to enter the fray, and is quickly becoming a popular format in the game,” stated SLC president Shammi Silva in a news release. “We are excited to be a part of this newer venture, and we are confident that the initial version of the Lanka T10 will be a success.”

The Lanka T10 will be organised by SLC in collaboration with T Ten Sports Management Group, which also organises the Abu Dhabi T10 and the Zim-Afro T10 events. Another of their offerings is the US Master T10 competition.

“We have not only established T10 as a legitimate format of the game over the years, but also the most entertaining one,” Shaji Ul Mulk, Chairman of T Ten Sports, said of the collaboration.

Sri Lanka has become the ICC’s second Full Member country to authorise a T10 league. The first was the Zimbabwe Cricket-sponsored Zim-Afro competition, which took place in July. Sri Lanka also hosts the Lanka Premier League, a six-team T20 tournament that concluded in August 2023.
