After contracting the condition in South Africa, the left-arm spinner was ruled out of the ODI World Cup.
Ashton Agar has had a recurrence of the calf injury that kept him out of the ODI World Cup and is unlikely to be eligible for Australia’s five-match T20I series against India following the World Cup.
Agar initially tore his calf when exercising with Western Australia during pre-season, ruling him out of the T20I series against South Africa in late August. He returned to play in the first One-Day International against South Africa in September, but he injured his hamstring and was unable to play again before coming home for the birth of his first child.
He was later ruled out of the World Cup, and Marnus Labuschagne took his place. He was preparing to compete in the Marsh Cup in November and be fit for the T20I series against India, but he has now suffered another setback.
“Given Agar is a nationally contracted player, WA Cricket will work closely with Cricket Australia to determine his return to play,” the WA Cricket Association said in a statement.
When Agar was replaced in the World Cup team, selection chair George Bailey left the door open for him to return as a replacement player if another injury occurred, though it’s understood his initial rehabilitation schedule would have made that improbable.
Agar may now face a tight timetable to be ready for the start of Perth Scorchers’ BBL tight defence, which begins on December 10 against Melbourne Renegades. He had a poor season last year, taking only six wickets in ten games.
