Shubman Gill, the rising Indian cricket star, has dethroned Babar Azam as the world’s No. 1 ODI batsman, marking a watershed point in his early career. Gill’s ascension to the top of the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Batting Rankings was aided by his outstanding performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. He is only the fourth Indian player to hold this prestigious position, including cricket luminaries Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.
Gill’s stunning rise to the top of the ODI batting rankings can be credited to his tournament run-scoring consistency. He scored 92 against Sri Lanka and contributed 23 runs against South Africa, totaling 219 runs from six innings in the competition.
In contrast, Pakistan’s skipper and former No. 1 ODI hitter, Babar Azam, was unable to preserve his position as the top-rated batter. His World Cup effort, which yielded 282 runs in eight innings, caused him to lose his throne and fall six rating points behind Gill, settling for second place.
This big breakthrough comes on the heels of Virat Kohli’s resurgence, which saw him go to fourth place in the ODI batting rankings, and Indian skipper Rohit Sharma move up to sixth place.
