Andrew Flintoff has been named head coach of the Northern Superchargers in the Hundred, as the former England captain begins his public comeback after a catastrophic car accident.
Flintoff gradually returned to the spotlight through cricket this summer after being hospitalised with facial and rib injuries after a crash while filming a stunt for the BBC show Top Gear last December.
He will take over as head coach for the first time, succeeding former England wicketkeeper James Foster, who left the Superchargers this week following two years with the Headingley-based squad.
“I am excited to have been appointed head coach of the Northern Superchargers men’s team,” the 45-year-old stated in a statement.
Flintoff, who was a national treasure for his role in the pivotal 2005 Ashes and was capped 227 times by England in all formats, has turned to television after retiring from cricket.
He had faded from public view in the months following his crash, but was persuaded to return by close friend and former teammate Rob Key, the director of England men’s cricket.
Flintoff was an unpaid member of England’s backroom team for their ODI series against New Zealand and Ireland last summer, and he will fly to Abu Dhabi later this week as part of the coaching staff for a training camp for the second-string Lions.
