Gautam Gambhir believes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should be selected for T20Is in the future, and he wants the former to skipper India in next year’s World Cup.
According to reports, Rohit appears to be shifting his focus away from T20Is. According to reports as of November 22, the Indian captain is unlikely to continue playing in the shortest format of the tournament. The hard schedule of playing across all formats, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), and the impending seven Test matches slated between December 2023 and March 2024, appear to have affected this strategic decision.
Sharma’s emphasis is shifting to red-ball cricket, with the goal of leading India to another World Test Championship final in 2025. His traditional cricket form has been commendable after assuming the role of India’s opener in 2019.
Both Kohli and Rohit were exceptional for India during the World Cup 2023 campaign, finishing first and second in the competition for most runs scored.
Gambhir told Sportskeeda that he wants both men to be selected for T20Is and that he wants Rohit to skipper the team at next year’s World Cup. The former Indian opener believes Rohit should be named captain rather than merely a batter.
Gambhir believes that Kohli should be an automatic starter.
“They both need to be chosen, and both should be chosen.” More significantly, I want Rohit Sharma to be the captain of the T20 World Cup. Yes, Hardik has been captaining in T20Is, but I still want Rohit to captain India in the World Cup. “Do not select Rohit Sharma solely as a batter,” Gambhir said to Sportskeeda.
“Rohit is a fantastic leader, as evidenced by his leadership and batting in this ODI World Cup.” If you choose Rohit, as you should, he should be chosen as a captain who can bat. And Virat should be an obvious pick as well,” he continued.
