David Warner announced his retirement from one-day internationals (ODIs) at a news conference at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where he has been an essential since his debut in 2009, helping Australia win the World Cup in 2015 and 2023.
David Warner, an Australian cricketer, has announced his retirement from one-day international (ODI) cricket. This news follows his prior declaration that he would retire from Test cricket following Australia’s upcoming match against Pakistan in Sydney.
However, the 37-year-old opening batsman stated that his cricket career will continue in select competitions, notably the 2025 Champions Trophy.
“I’ve got to give back to the family and also on the back of that I’m definitely retiring from one-day cricket as well,” he said at a presser in Sydney.
“That was something that I had said through the (2023) World Cup, get through that, and winning it in India, I think that’s a massive achievement.
“So I’ll make that decision today, to retire from those forms, which does allow me to go and play some other (Twenty20) leagues around the world and sort of get the one-day team moving forward a little bit.
“I know there’s a Champions Trophy coming up,” he added. “If I’m playing decent cricket in two years’ time and I’m around and they need someone, I’m going to be available.”
The Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan in 2025. Warner will remain accessible in the T20 format, with the Caribbean and United States hosting the World Cup in 2024.
As a result of Warner’s decision, Australia will now seek a new opener for their three-match series against the West Indies in February, which will be followed by a two-Test series in Adelaide and Brisbane.
During a news conference at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Warner also reminisced on his career highlights.
Winning the World Cup in India this year, he says, was a “massive achievement” that influenced his retirement decision. “I’m definitely retiring from one-day cricket as well,” he said. That was something I mentioned during the World Cup; getting through it and winning it in India is a big achievement.”
