On Wednesday, at the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) annual general meeting, Jay Shah’s term as president was unanimously extended for one year.
Shammi Silva, president of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), proposed Shah’s extension for the second time, and the nomination was overwhelmingly supported by all ACC members. Shah took over the ACC from Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan in January 2021, becoming the organization’s youngest administrator to be re-appointed.
Under Shah’s leadership, the ACC successfully organised the Asia Cup in T20 format in 2022 and ODI format in 2023, demonstrating Asia’s potential to hold elite cricket tournaments.
“Jay has played a pivotal role in steering the ACC towards significant progress in promoting and developing cricket across the Asian region,” Silva said in a statement.
He also expressed his happiness with the proposal’s unanimous support at the ACC Board meeting. “I am glad that the ACC Board unanimously approved the idea. Jay has a solid track record of increasing revenue through commercial and media arrangements and channelling funds to the grassroots level, thereby empowering associate members.”
Hassan hailed the reappointment, adding, “I applaud Shah and all members of the ACC on unanimously voting to prolong his tenure. Under Shah, the ACC has reached new heights, and he has played a key role in growing and strengthening grassroots cricket. The Asia Cup has become the most sought-after and anticipated continental tournament in world cricket.
“Mr. Shah deserves credit for bringing this competition to the level it deserves. I am convinced that cricket in Asia will continue to thrive, and we will collaborate closely with the ACC to advance this goal.”
