Middle-order English batsman Harry Brook has withdrawn from the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which begins on March 22, citing personal reasons.
Delhi Capitals signed Brook for Rs 4 crore at the Dubai auction last year.
He is the second England player, following Jason Roy, to withdraw from the IPL 2024 for personal reasons. According to Cricbuzz, the practice of England players departing from obligations for personal reasons has created anger among IPL franchisees.
It further stated that unexpected and sudden pullouts disturb the auction strategy of the various teams, and IPL franchises are considering addressing the matter with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Brook scored only 190 runs at a low average of 21 for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2023.
“Once players register for the auction, they should honour their commitment. Reneging on it is unprofessional, and the BCCI should address this,” a franchise official was quoted as saying in the report.
Brook withdrew from England’s Test tour of India in January of this year for personal reasons. “Harry Brook will return home immediately from England’s Men’s Test tour of India due to personal concerns. He will not return to India.
“The Brook family respectfully requests privacy during this time. In light of this, the ECB and the family kindly request the media and the public to respect their wish for privacy and refrain from intruding on their private space,” said the ECB in the statement at that time.
The Delhi Capitals will kick off their IPL 2024 campaign against the Punjab Kings on March 23 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium in Mullanpur, Mohali.
