Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews was named to Sri Lanka’s World Cup roster on Tuesday, replacing injured pacer Matheesha Pathirana, ahead of the team’s encounter against England on Thursday.

Pathirana suffered a shoulder injury in Sri Lanka’s match against Pakistan and did not play in the remaining games against Australia and the Netherlands.

This is the fourth World Cup of Mathews since the 2011 edition, and the 36-year-old has played 221 ODIs for Sri Lanka.

He has scored 5865 runs with three hundreds and 40 fifties and has taken 120 wickets in the format.

Sri Lanka summoned him as a travelling reserve this week, along with pacer Dushmantha Chameera, after he was left out of the country’s first World Cup roster.

Pathirana is the second Sri Lankan player to be ruled out of the World Cup, following captain Dasun Shanaka, who returned home with a quadriceps rupture that required at least three weeks of recuperation time.

Shanaka’s replacement has been named Chamika Karunaratne.

In Shanaka’s absence, Kusal Mendis has taken over as Lankan captain.
