Due to the approaching General Elections, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will release the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 schedule in phases. The Governing Council, chaired by Arun Singh Dhumal, is finalising details and will announce the first phase schedule soon. Sources acquainted with the situation acknowledged a staged approach, similar to the 2019 season, which coincided with national elections. This ensures a seamless deployment while accounting for the logistical obstacles faced by the voting process.
According to a source, the IPL is expected to begin around the end of March, with the BCCI releasing the fixtures in stages. According to the source, the BCCI, IPL Governing Council, and franchisees have discussed the preliminary schedule.
In 2019, India’s General Elections were held in seven parts, prompting the BCCI to only publish the IPL schedule for the first two weeks. They held off on publicising the remainder until they understood how the elections would affect everything.
The IPL is a vital season for the 2024 T20 World Cup prospects, as league performances will be used to choose the squad for the ICC event later this year. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has announced that all national selectors will attend IPL matches at various venues.
The BCCI has officially declared that the full season will be held in India. There are no plans to relocate the competition due to the approaching General Elections.
The BCCI medical team and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) will closely monitor the workload of players anticipated to make the T20 World Cup cut, and all franchises would be forced to follow whatever the “supreme body” recommends.
“Franchises must adhere to the decisions made by BCCI. BCCI holds the highest authority, and we stand superior to the franchises,” Shah said.
The selection committee will take league performances into account while deciding on the roster for the ICC World Cup 2024 later this year.
