Mohammed Shami In Contention To Receive Prestigious Arjuna Award After World Cup Heroics

Despite suffering a sad setback at the hands of the Australian team in the Final, India’s campaign leading up to the big stage was nothing short of spectacular. The Indian team was captained by Rohit Sharma, who entered the final on a 10-match winning streak. The unique aspect of that campaign was that every player on the club delivered whenever the team needed it. Mohammed Shami, an Indian bowler, was one of those players that impressed everyone.

Shami put up back-to-back outstanding performances for the Men in Blue during the World Cup 2023 campaign. The right-arm bowler performed admirably, taking 24 wickets at a strike rate of 10.70 and an economy rate of 5.26. Surprisingly, Shami accomplished these stats in only seven games. Overall, the 33-year-old speedster emerged as the 2023 Cricket World Cup’s leading wicket-taker.

Shami is now a contender for the Arjuna Award, according to sources quoted in the Times of India. This year, the selection committee proposed the veteran speedster for the prestigious award, recognising his remarkable performance in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. According to sources, the Indian Cricket Board (ICB) made a specific appeal to the Sports Ministry. Shami’s name was initially left off the list of candidates for the Arjuna Award, the second-highest athletic accolade.
