Mohammed Shami, India’s top pacer, is unlikely to participate in the next Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 because to an injury that would necessitate surgery, according to reports.
This is a big blow to the franchise, since Shami led the Gujarat Titans’ pace assault.
“When he went for surgery the last time he was given some injections but that didn’t work out for him. So now he will undergo surgery. It seems that he will miss IPL,” a Gujarat Titans’ source said.
Shami made a key contribution to GT’s success over both seasons. The 33-year-old bowler took 20 wickets in 2022 and improved his performance even more in IPL 2023, taking 28 wickets at an average of 18.64. Shami was particularly lethal with the new ball.
The 33-year-old, who is not participating in the current five-match Test series against England, last played for India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November.
Shami, who claimed 24 wickets in India’s amazing World Cup campaign, played in misery owing to landing troubles, but he did not let it affect his performance.
GT will enter the IPL 2024 sans Hardik Pandya, who left the club after leading the team to its first trophy in 2022. Pandya returned to the five-time champion Mumbai Indians and succeeded Rohit Sharma as captain of the franchise.
Shubman Gill, the renowned opener, will lead the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2024.
