The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on April 22 fined Virat Kohli 50 per cent of match fees on Virat Kohli for Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct.
The decision was decided after Kohli appealed umpire’s judgement on his controversial dismissal at Eden Gardens in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders.
“Virat Kohli, Batter, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been fined 50 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024,” IPL stated in a statement.
Kohli was caught and bowled by KKR’s Harshit Rana on a high full-toss delivery while RCB was pursuing a 223-run goal against them. Kohli demanded a no ball after the umpire signalled it out. Faf du Plessis, captain of the RCB, also endorsed Kohli.
The broadcasters eventually provided a comprehensive explanation for why Kohli was given out. They stated that Kohli’s waist was 1.04 metres high, while the delivery was 0.92 metres at the most likely point of contact if the batter stood upright at the popping crease. After arguing with the umpire, Kohli appeared unconvinced and returned to the pavilion depressed.
Earlier in the day, the BCCI imposed a hefty fine on both the skippers – RCB’s Faf du Plessis and PBKS’ Sam Curran – for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.
RCB’s Faf du Plessis has been fined ₹12 lakh after his team maintained a slow over-rate, while Sam Curran has been fined 50 percent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct for a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8. It pertains to showing ‘dissent at an umpire’s decision’ during PBKS’ three-wicket loss to Gujarat Titans in Mullanpur on Sunday.
