Shubman Gill got off to a flying start for India in their high-profile World Cup 2023 match against New Zealand. The youngster picked up nearly 50 runs for the opening wicket alongside captain Rohit Sharma while chasing 274 on a lively Dharamsala track.
During his recent run-chase effort, Gill also eclipsed Pakistan batting legend Babar Azam and former cricketer Hashim Amla for the all-time ODI record.

Shubman Gill, who made his ODI debut against New Zealand in Hamilton in January 2019, has now scored 2,000 runs in 50-overs matches. The explosive right-handed opener reached the milestone statistic in only his 38th ODI innings, making him the fastest batsman in the format’s history.
Gill broke the 2,000-run barrier two innings faster than former South African opener Hashim Amla. Furthermore, he did it in seven innings shorter than Pakistan captain and batting icon Babar Azam. Rassie van der Dussen of South Africa, another World Cup 2023 hopeful, reached 2,000 runs in the existing campaign, although in his 45th ODI innings.
